Long-exposure photography is achieved when a photographer uses a long shutter speed to sharpen the appearance of stationary objects while blurring the shot’s moving elements. When photographing water, this produces a misty effect. Rarely is this better represented than in shots of picturesque waterfalls cascading down rocks.

The colors of fall form the backdrop to this stunning sheet of water. The long exposure creates the sense of mistiness in the water whilst allowing the rock behind to show through boldly.

8. Lower Ruckel Creek Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, USA

As this waterfall plunges over the rocks, the long exposure shows its beauty from top to bottom – before the water flows through the rocky creek.

7. Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, NSW, Australia

In the next shot, not only does the long exposure give a special light to the waterfall itself, but the current in the swirling pool at the bottom seems to be marked by water trails too.

6. Lower Little Mashel Falls, Eatonville, Washington, USA

Lower Little Mashel Falls in Eatonville is tucked away in a glen. The sun’s rays at the top edge of the falls set off the water beautifully.

5. Ecola Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, USA

A shapely waterfall, Oregon’s Ecola looks like a woman with a narrow waist (and could that be her walking stick?). Black rocks, green moss and foliage form the backdrop to the misting water.

4. Lower Lewis River Falls, Skamania County, Washington, USA

One can feel the power emanating from this waterfall. As photographer Ara Roselani puts it: „[J]ust scary, beautiful, awesome nature thundering away.“

3. Bridal Veil Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, USA

Here is another example of the stunning effect long exposures give to water – which seems to be shimmering in this photograph.

2. The Subway, Zion National Park, Utah, USA

This might only be a miniature waterfall in the ‘subway’ portion of a slot canyon, but it throws the water and rocks around it into relief magnificently.

1. Wentworth Falls, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia

A veritable gauze-like sheet of mist and light, with wet rocks and vegetation visible behind, provides a lovely note on which to finish this post.
